What each tool is
Removal.ai is a credit-based background remover built for volume, with a free low-resolution tier; WipeMark is a free web tool for one photo at a time, full size. Removal.ai offers a web uploader, a bulk tool, a Mac and Windows desktop app, a Figma plugin and a REST API, all sharing one credit balance. It also sells human-edited background removal as a paid service.
WipeMark does two things in the browser: removes backgrounds on the home page and erases unwanted things from your own photos at /erase-image. There is no account, no credits and no paid tier; it is funded by sponsor logo tiles next to the tool.
The free tier in detail
Removal.ai's free download is capped at 0.25 megapixels unless you sign up. Its pricing page says the background remover is "100% FREE background remover for low-resolution images (0.25 megapixels) and personal uses," and its FAQ confirms there is no limit on how many low-resolution images you can process without an account: "You can download it in a low resolution for free, without limit on how many images you process." Signing up unlocks one high-resolution download, described in the same FAQ as a free credit "that allows you one (1) high-resolution download." Uploads are capped at 12 MB, and anything over 36 megapixels is resized down before processing.
WipeMark's free download is the full-size cut-out for photos up to 25 megapixels, in PNG, JPG or WebP, with a transparent, white, black or custom-color background. There is no daily cap set by WipeMark, and no signup step at any point.
Quality and edge cases
Both tools automate the cutout, so the fair comparison is what each offers when the result needs a fix. Removal.ai's product pages describe a manual erase and restore brush and a background-replacement editor, similar in spirit to WipeMark's touch-up tools. We have not run a side-by-side quality test against Removal.ai, so we make no claim about whose edges, hair or glass detection is better — try the same photo on both, since Removal.ai's low-resolution preview is also free.
WipeMark runs BiRefNet, an open model under the MIT license, then gives you Restore and Erase brushes to fix any area the model misses. For background removal from a product photo specifically, see our guide to removing a background from a photo.
Privacy and uploads
Removal.ai uploads your full image to its servers and says it deletes both the original and the result within about an hour; WipeMark sends at most a 1024 px copy and stores nothing. Removal.ai's privacy policy states: "We delete both the uploaded image and the result image an hour after the upload at the latest," and that uploaded images are "only be used in the process of removing the background." Server logs, without image data, are kept for up to three months. Removal.ai's FAQ also confirms that processing, including from the desktop app, happens on its servers.
WipeMark sends a reduced copy of your photo, at most 1024 pixels on the long side, to its server; the model returns a mask, and the full-size cut-out is assembled in your browser, so the original file never leaves your device. Nothing is stored or logged. Full details are on our privacy page.
Where Removal.ai is better
Removal.ai is the stronger choice for scale. It offers things WipeMark does not:
- A bulk web tool for up to 100 images per upload, and a desktop app Removal.ai says can "process over 1,000 images in a single run."
- A REST API with published throughput, up to 500 images a minute at 1 megapixel.
- A Figma plugin.
- Output up to 36 megapixels, compared to WipeMark's 25 megapixel limit.
- A human-edited background-removal service for photos that need expert retouching.
WipeMark processes one photo at a time, has no API, no desktop or mobile app, needs a connection for the background step, and takes about 20 seconds per photo. It is also new, with none of Removal.ai's multi-year track record.
When to use which
Use WipeMark for an occasional, full-size cut-out; use Removal.ai when background removal is a recurring, high-volume job. If you need one transparent PNG for a listing, a profile picture or a presentation slide, WipeMark gives you the full file with no signup. If you run an online store and need hundreds of product photos cut out every week, or you want this built into Figma or your own app through an API, Removal.ai's credits and tooling are built for exactly that. For other options, see our remove.bg alternatives roundup, which covers tools like this one.
Removal.ai's terms also place the responsibility for upload rights on you: its terms state "it is the User's responsibility to secure rights for the use of photos that are to be uploaded into the Platform." WipeMark is meant for your own photos too; see is it legal to remove a watermark for the broader legal question around other people's images.
Free, full size, no sign-up and no watermark.
Remove a background nowHow to switch
Switching needs no account, because WipeMark has none.
- Open WipeMark and drop in a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo up to 25 megapixels.
- Wait about 20 seconds for the mask.
- Use the Restore or Erase brush to fix any edge.
- Choose a transparent, white, black or custom background.
- Download as PNG for transparency, or JPG or WebP for a solid background — see transparent PNGs explained for which to pick.
If something else in the photo needs removing, such as a sign or a stray object, use the eraser. For more comparisons, see the compare page.
Questions people ask
Is Removal.ai free?
Partly. Removal.ai's own pricing and FAQ pages say you can download unlimited low-resolution cut-outs (0.25 megapixels) for free without an account, and get one free high-resolution download by signing up. Beyond that, high-resolution downloads use paid credits.
Does Removal.ai put a watermark on free downloads?
Removal.ai's pages do not say either way. We did not find a statement about a watermark on the low-resolution free download, so this is not stated rather than confirmed.
How much does Removal.ai cost?
Removal.ai's own pages disagree. Its pricing page lists 100 credits for $5.99 a month, while its FAQ page separately describes monthly plans starting at $5.99 for 40 credits. Check Removal.ai's current pricing page directly before buying.
What is the best free alternative to Removal.ai for a full-size image?
If you need one photo at full size, WipeMark gives you the complete cut-out, up to 25 megapixels, with no account, watermark or credits. If you need to process dozens or hundreds of images, Removal.ai's bulk tool and desktop app are built for that and WipeMark is not.
Does Removal.ai have an API?
Yes. Removal.ai's own FAQ describes a REST API with published rate limits, up to 500 images a minute at 1 megapixel and 25 megapixels maximum through the API.
