What each tool is

Clipdrop is a multi-tool AI photo editor that includes Cleanup, its object and watermark remover, plus background removal, upscaling and other tools, with free tiers capped by resolution and daily use; WipeMark is a free web tool for one photo at a time, full size. Clipdrop's background-remover page and its Cleanup tool are two of several tools under one account, alongside an image upscaler, relight, uncrop, and a text-to-image generator. Cleanup.pictures is a separate, still-live site from the same company that hosts the same tool with its own pricing page.

WipeMark does two jobs, with no account: background removal on the home page, and erasing unwanted things from your own photos at /erase-image.

The free tier in detail

Clipdrop's free tier is capped by both resolution and a daily request limit, and the cap is different for each tool. Its pricing page lists free quotas of "Background Removal 20/24h," "Cleanup 20/24h," "Image Upscaler x2 20/24h" and "Text Remover 50/24h." For Cleanup specifically, both clipdrop.co/cleanup and the standalone cleanup.pictures state the free export is "limited to 720px" or "Resolution limited to 720p," with "no size limit" on Pro. Background removal's free mode is described in the interface as "SD Mode," and large uploads trigger a prompt to "Upgrade to Pro to keep the original quality, or downscale the image and continue," though the exact pixel cap for that SD mode is not stated on the pages we could read. A free login is suggested for more credits, but the base free tier does not appear to require an account.

WipeMark's free download, for both tools, is the full-size result: up to 25 megapixels for background removal, and the full photo for the eraser, with no daily limit and no account.

Quality and edge cases

Both tools are AI inpainting and segmentation under the hood, so the honest comparison is what each covers, not whose result looks better. Clipdrop's free Cleanup export is capped at 720p, which is well under what most phone cameras capture, so quality at full resolution is only available on Pro. WipeMark's eraser works at full resolution for free: you paint or box the area, a reduced crop (at most 1024 px) is sent to the LaMa model, and the patch is placed into the full-size photo in your browser. We have not run a side-by-side quality test between the two, so we make no claim about which inpainting result looks cleaner; the resolution difference on the free tier is the documented fact, not a quality judgment.

Privacy and uploads

Clipdrop's privacy policy says images may be stored on its cloud for up to two years without an account, or for the life of your account with one; WipeMark sends only a reduced copy and stores nothing. Clipdrop's privacy policy states its purpose includes to "analyse and process images, transfer them from one device to another, store your photos on our cloud for service improvement purposes." On retention: "When you have not created your account: images, photographs and texts are retained during two year[s]," and "When you have created your account: personal data are retained for the duration of your account." It adds that data "may be archived for probationary purposes for a period of 5 years." Clipdrop's terms separately ban using the service for "research/development of artificial intelligence (in particular generation of training data)," though this restricts users rather than describing what Clipdrop itself does with uploads.

WipeMark sends a reduced copy of your photo, at most 1024 pixels on the long side, to its server. The full-size result is assembled in your browser, and the original file never leaves your device; nothing is stored or logged. See our privacy page.

Where Clipdrop is better

Clipdrop is the stronger pick if you want many AI photo tools in one account. It has features WipeMark does not try to offer:

  • An image upscaler (2x free, 16x on Pro), relight, uncrop, background replacement and text-to-image generation, all in one toolkit.
  • A Text Remover with a higher free quota (50 uses per 24 hours) than its other tools.
  • An API, now run through Jasper, and mobile apps.
  • Commercial-use terms stated directly: "Our terms do not limit your ability to use images generated on ClipDrop for commercial use."
  • A longer track record under InitML, Stability AI and now Jasper.

WipeMark covers two jobs only, background removal and erasing, has no API, no mobile app, no upscaler, needs a connection for the background step, and is new.

When to use which

Use WipeMark for a full-size cut-out or erase with no account and no resolution cap; use Clipdrop when you need its broader toolkit or are fine with the free tier's limits. If you need one clean, full-resolution result today, WipeMark skips the 720p cap on Cleanup and the SD-mode downscaling on background removal. If you want an upscaler, a text-to-image generator or Clipdrop's API alongside object removal, its free daily quotas may be enough, and Pro removes the caps. How to switch

There is no account to create on WipeMark's side.

  1. For an object or watermark in your own photo, open the eraser and paint or box the area.
  2. Wait a few seconds while LaMa fills the gap; repeat as needed.
  3. For a background, open WipeMark, drop in a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo up to 25 megapixels, and wait about 20 seconds.
  4. Use the Restore or Erase brush to fix any edge, then pick a transparent, white, black or custom background.
  5. Download as PNG, JPG or WebP — see transparent PNGs explained if you are unsure which to pick.

Questions people ask

Is Cleanup.pictures free?

Yes, with a resolution cap. Clipdrop's own Cleanup pages say the free export is limited to 720p, with no size limit on the Pro plan, and the free plan allows roughly 20 uses per 24 hours before you are asked to subscribe.

Does Clipdrop remove watermarks?

Yes, Cleanup markets this directly: its own copy says you can 'Remove text, logo or watermark,' with the caveat 'Only remove watermarks on images for which you have an explicit license.'

Who owns Clipdrop now?

Clipdrop's FAQ says it was built by InitML, which was acquired by Stability AI in February 2023 and later sold to Jasper in February 2024. Its background-remover page now says 'Clipdrop is part of Jasper.'

What is the best free alternative to Clipdrop for a full-size, watermark-free result?

WipeMark gives you the full-size result for background removal, up to 25 megapixels, with no account and no resolution cap. For erasing something from a photo, WipeMark's eraser is also full size. If you specifically need Clipdrop's extra tools, like its image upscaler or relight feature, WipeMark does not offer those.

Is it legal to remove a watermark with Cleanup.pictures?

Clipdrop's own interface tells you to only remove watermarks from images you have an explicit license for. For the general legal question, see our post on whether it is legal to remove a watermark.
