The short answer
Pick WipeMark if you just want a cut-out and nothing else. Pick Canva if you are already designing in Canva and want background removal inside the same editor as your templates, brand kit and other tools.

|---|---|---|
| Free download size | Full size, up to 25 MP | Not stated on Canva's feature page; it only says exports are high-resolution PNG |
| Watermark on free result | None | Not stated |

| Free limit | No daily limit | Not stated exactly; Canva's own page markets Canva Pro for 'unlimited usage' of background removal |
| Cheapest paid plan | None, it is free | Canva Pro, priced by plan and region; Canva's privacy policy and feature pages do not list a figure we could confirm live |
| What gets uploaded | A copy of at most 1024 px; nothing stored | The full design and any uploaded media, which Canva's privacy policy says may be analyzed to train its AI models unless you opt out |
| Batch / API | No / No | Not stated on the pages we could read |

What each tool is
Canva is a full design editor with background removal as one tool inside it; WipeMark is a free, single-purpose web tool for cutting out a background or erasing something from a photo. Canva's Background Remover feature page positions the tool as a step inside its editor: upload a photo, then select "BG Remover" on the toolbar to continue designing with templates, a brand kit, stock photos and Canva's other AI tools. Canva also owns remove.bg, which it is folding into the main platform.
WipeMark has no editor around it. It does two jobs in the browser: background removal on the home page, and erasing unwanted things from your own photos at /erase-image. There is no account and no design surface, just the result.
The free tier in detail
Canva's own feature page does not state a free-tier resolution or a numeric free limit; it instead markets Canva Pro for unlimited use. The page says: "Sign up for Canva Pro for unlimited usage and access to more tools like Video Background Remover." That sentence tells you the free plan is limited in some way, but Canva does not say by how much on that page, and we could not read Canva's full help-center or pricing pages directly to confirm a number, since canva.com blocked our automated fetch. Where we could not verify a fact on Canva's own page, we have written "Not stated" rather than repeating a secondhand figure.
WipeMark's free download is the full-size cut-out, up to 25 megapixels, as PNG, JPG or WebP, with no account and nothing to upgrade.
Quality and edge cases
We have no documented, vendor-stated detail on Canva's background-removal quality to compare against WipeMark, so we are not making a claim either way. Canva's feature page lists the tool as part of a broader design flow, not as a standalone benchmark. If you want to see how the underlying technology generally handles hair, glass or reflections, our post on how AI background removal works explains the method WipeMark uses; Canva does not publish the same level of model detail on its feature page.
Privacy and uploads
Canva's privacy policy says it may use your uploaded media to train its AI models unless you opt out; WipeMark sends only a reduced copy and stores nothing. Canva's privacy policy states: "We may analyze your activity, content, media uploads and related data in your account to provide and customize the Service... and to train our algorithms, models and AI products and services using machine learning... You can manage the use of your data for training AI to improve our Service in the privacy controls page under your privacy settings." The same policy adds an exception: "We will not use User Content of Canva Education for AI training."
WipeMark sends a reduced copy of your photo, at most 1024 pixels on the long side, to its server for the background step. The full-size cut-out is made in your browser, so the original file never leaves your device, and nothing is stored or logged. See our privacy page for the full picture.
Where Canva is better
Canva is the better choice if you are designing something, not just cutting something out. It offers a wide set of tools around background removal that WipeMark does not try to match:
- A full design editor with templates, a brand kit, stock photography and Magic Resize.
- Canva AI tools beyond background removal, including a Video Background Remover on paid plans per its feature page.
- A design workflow where the cutout drops straight into a layout you are already building, rather than needing to be exported and re-imported elsewhere.
- Native apps and a long-established product, now also absorbing remove.bg's technology.
WipeMark does one job at a time, has no design surface, no templates, no account and no mobile app, and it is new.
When to use which
Use WipeMark when you only need the cut-out; use Canva when the cut-out is one step in a design you are already building there. If you want a transparent PNG for a logo, a slide or a listing and nothing else, WipeMark gives you that directly with no login. If you are putting together a flyer, social post or presentation in Canva already, removing the background inside the same editor saves exporting and re-importing, within whatever Canva's free plan allows that day. See our remove.bg alternatives roundup for other options in between.
Free, full size, no sign-up and no watermark.
Remove a background nowHow to switch
Switching takes no setup, because WipeMark needs no account.
- Open WipeMark and drop in a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo up to 25 megapixels.
- Wait about 20 seconds for the mask.
- Use the Restore or Erase brush on any rough edge.
- Choose a transparent, white, black or custom background.
- Download as PNG for transparency, or JPG or WebP for a solid background — see transparent PNGs explained.
If you need to remove something else from the photo entirely, such as a sign or a stranger in frame, use the eraser. For every comparison, see the compare page.
Questions people ask
Is Canva's background remover free?
Canva's own feature page for Background Remover tells visitors to sign up for Canva Pro for unlimited use, which implies the free plan has a limit, but Canva does not state the exact free limit or resolution on that page.
Does Canva add a watermark to background removal?
Not stated. We did not find a statement either way on Canva's feature or help pages, so we are not claiming one.
What is the best free alternative to Canva for a background cut-out?
If you only need a cut-out and not a design editor, WipeMark gives you the full-size result for free with no account. If you are already building a design in Canva and want the background removed inside the same canvas, Canva's integrated tool saves a step, within whatever its free limits are.
Does Canva use my uploaded images to train its AI?
Canva's privacy policy says it may analyze your content and media uploads to train its algorithms and AI models, and that you can manage this in your account's privacy settings, with an exception for Canva for Education content, which it says is not used for AI training.
Is remove.bg the same company as Canva?
Yes. remove.bg became part of Canva in 2021, and remove.bg's own FAQ page says its background-removal functionality is now being migrated into the Canva platform.
