What each tool is

Pixlr is a layered photo editor with background removal as one of its AI tools, running on a credit system across cheap paid tiers; WipeMark is a free, single-purpose web tool for one photo at a time. Pixlr's background-remover page sits alongside its full Pixlr Editor and Pixlr Express tools, plus AI image, video and audio generators and an image upscaler.

WipeMark has no editor around it: background removal on the home page, and erasing unwanted things from your own photos at /erase-image, with no account.

The free tier in detail

Pixlr's background-remover page states the tool is free but does not publish a resolution cap, account requirement or daily limit on that page. It says: "The tool is free and designed for everyone... at no cost." Its FAQ describes batch processing: "Batch processing lets you select and erase backgrounds from multiple images in one go, then save them all together as a zip." It supports JPEG, PNG and BMP input. Beyond that, we could not confirm on the page whether removing a background costs an AI credit, what the free export resolution is, or whether an account is required, so those remain not stated.

WipeMark's free download is the full-size cut-out, up to 25 megapixels, as PNG, JPG or WebP, with no account, no watermark and no credit system.

Quality and edge cases

We have no documented, vendor-stated quality comparison between Pixlr and WipeMark, so we make no claim either way. Pixlr positions its background remover as one tool inside a broader AI and editing suite rather than a standalone benchmark. For background on what WipeMark's model does, see how AI background removal works.

Privacy and uploads

Pixlr's privacy policy makes narrow, specific promises about AI training rather than a blanket statement covering every tool, so we are reporting only what it says. Pixlr's privacy policy, last updated September 23, 2026, states data "are retained as long as necessary for the performance of the services," and that if you close your account, "We will delete your Personal Data and information within thirty (30) days." On AI training, it specifically says it will not use "data obtained through the Google Workspace APIs" to train generalized AI or machine-learning models, and that "Face data (for AI tools) is never shared with third parties." A separate children's privacy section says photos there are "stored locally within the web browser. We do not upload nor store any photographs or content," but this is written for children's use and we could not confirm whether the same local-only handling applies to adult use of the background remover.

WipeMark sends a reduced copy of your photo, at most 1024 pixels on the long side, to its server for the background step. The full-size cut-out is assembled in your browser, so the original file never leaves your device, and nothing is stored or logged. See our privacy page for details.

Where Pixlr is better

Pixlr is the stronger pick if you want a full editor and AI suite at a low monthly price. It has features WipeMark does not try to match:

  • A full layered editor, Pixlr Editor, plus the simpler Pixlr Express.
  • AI image, video and audio generators, and an image upscaler.
  • Batch background removal with a zip download.
  • Desktop and mobile apps alongside the web editor.
  • A cheap entry paid tier: Plus at $1.99 to $2.49 a month, well under most competitors' starting price.

WipeMark handles one photo at a time, has no layered editor, no AI generators, no desktop or mobile app, needs a connection for the background step, and is new.

When to use which

Use WipeMark for a single, full-size cut-out with no account; use Pixlr when you want a broader editor or its AI generation tools at a low price. If you want one clean PNG today, WipeMark gives you that directly with no credits to track. If you are already editing in Pixlr's layered editor, or want its AI image and video tools alongside background removal, its Plus tier is inexpensive enough to be worth comparing. See our remove.bg alternatives roundup for more options.

How to switch

There is no account to set up on WipeMark's side.

  1. Open WipeMark and drop in a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo up to 25 megapixels.
  2. Wait about 20 seconds for the mask.
  3. Use the Restore or Erase brush to fix any edge.
  4. Pick a transparent, white, black or custom background.
  5. Download as PNG for transparency, or JPG or WebP for a solid background.

If something else in the photo needs removing, use the eraser. See every comparison on the compare page.

Questions people ask

Is Pixlr's background remover free?

Pixlr's own page says the tool is free and designed for everyone to use at no cost, including batch processing that saves results as a zip file. It does not state an exact resolution cap, account requirement or daily limit on that page.

Does Pixlr add a watermark to free background removal?

Not stated. We did not find a statement about a watermark on the background-remover page, so we are not claiming one either way.

How much does Pixlr Plus cost?

Pixlr's pricing page lists Plus at $2.49 a month, or $1.99 a month billed yearly, described as a 20 percent saving. Plus includes an ad-free experience, unlimited saves and 80 monthly AI credits, per that page.

What is the best free alternative to Pixlr for a cut-out with no account?

WipeMark gives a full-size cut-out, up to 25 megapixels, with no account and no credit system to track. If you want Pixlr's full layered editor or its AI image, video and audio generators, WipeMark does not offer those.

Does Pixlr use my photos to train its AI?

Pixlr's privacy policy, last updated September 23, 2026, says it will not use data obtained through the Google Workspace APIs to train general AI or machine-learning models, and that face data used for AI tools is never shared with third parties. It does not state, on the sections we read, whether photos uploaded to the background remover itself are used for broader model training.
