What a good car listing photo shows

A car listing photo has one job: show the vehicle clearly and honestly. A plain background helps because it takes away the parking lot, the neighbor's bins and the other cars, so buyers look at your car. What it must not do is hide anything about the car itself. eBay's picture policy bans photos that do not accurately represent the item, along with added borders, added text and watermarks of any kind, and requires at least 500 pixels on the longest side.

Remove the background, not the scratches.

Shooting a car for a clean cut-out

Get the whole car in the frame. A bumper or mirror cut off by the frame edge ends in a straight line once the background is gone, and it looks clumsy.

Leave space between the car and anything else. A car parked tight beside another car, a wall or a hedge gives the model a hard decision where they overlap. Pull it out into open space if you can.

Shoot in even light. Overcast days are ideal. Strong sun creates bright reflections on paint and glass, and deep shadows under the car that blend into the tires.

Use the classic angles. Front three-quarter, rear three-quarter, side profile, front and back. They show the car's shape and cut out cleanly because the outline is simple.

Glass, wheels and shadows

Cars have three areas that need checking after any background removal.

Windows. Glass shows whatever is behind or reflected in it. The model may keep the windows as they are, with trees or buildings visible through them, or clear parts of them. Make all the windows consistent. Keeping them as photographed is usually the most honest and natural look.

Wheels. The gaps between spokes in alloy wheels show the ground or the background. Zoom in and clear those gaps with Erase so the new background shows through.

Shadows. The tool treats the shadow under the car as background, so the car can look like it is floating, especially on white. That is common in studio-style listings. If it bothers you, a light gray background makes it less noticeable than pure white.

Thin parts that go missing

Antennas, wing mirrors, roof racks, wipers and spoilers are thin or stick out from the body. Check each one, and paint back anything trimmed with Restore at a small brush size.

Hiding the license plate

Many private sellers hide their plate in listing photos. The background tool keeps the car untouched, including the plate. After downloading, open the photo in WipeMark's eraser, draw a box over the plate and erase it. A plain panel looks more natural than a blurred one.

Which format to download

For a listing, choose white or light gray and download JPG. It is small and accepted by every listing site. Download PNG with a transparent background if you want to place the car into a banner or flyer later.

Questions people ask

How do I remove the background from a car photo?

Photograph the whole car with space around it, drop it into the tool above and wait about 20 seconds. Then check the windows and wheels, fix anything missed with the touch-up brush, choose a background color and download at full size.

Why can I still see trees through the car windows?

The windows are glass, so the scene behind them is part of the photo of the car. The model may keep them as part of the car or clear them. Decide which look you want and use Erase or Restore on the glass to make all the windows match.

Is it allowed to replace the background in a car listing?

Most listing sites focus on whether the photo accurately shows the vehicle. eBay's picture policy, for example, bans photos that do not accurately represent the item and any added text, borders or watermarks. Replacing the background is different from hiding damage, which you should never do.

Can I blur or remove my license plate?

The background tool keeps the car as it is. Use WipeMark's eraser on the plate afterward, or cover it with a plain shape in an image editor. Many sellers hide the plate number in listing photos.

Can I process a whole lot of car photos at once?

No. WipeMark handles one photo at a time and has no batch mode or API. It fits a private seller listing one car, not a dealership processing a full lot every day.
