What marketplaces ask for
Most large marketplaces want the first image to show just the product on plain white. Amazon is the strictest. Its product image requirements ask for a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, on the main image, with the product filling at least 85 percent of the frame. They exclude text, logos, watermarks, inset images and props that are not part of the sale, and recommend 1,600 pixels or larger on the longest side, up to a maximum of 10,000. Some categories have their own rules, so read the page for yours.
eBay is looser on background but strict on honesty. Its picture policy requires at least 500 pixels on the longest side and bans added borders, added text and watermarks of any kind, as well as photos that do not accurately show the item.
Shopify is your own store, so the look is up to you, but uploads are capped at 20 megapixels or 20 megabytes.
Shoot the product so the cut-out is easy
The background remover does the hard part, but it works from what you give it.
- Put space between the product and the wall. A product pushed against the background casts a hard shadow that touches its edge, and that edge is harder to separate.
- Use a background that contrasts with the product. White products on a darker surface, dark products on a lighter one.
- Light from the side, not the top. Soft window light from one side shows the shape of the product and keeps reflections from washing out its edges.
- Shoot each product alone. If a listing needs a bundle, arrange the items together before you shoot, not afterward.
Problems product shots run into
Shiny packaging picks up the background. A glossy box or metal bottle reflects the room. Removing the background does not remove those reflections, because they are part of the product. Move or cover what is being reflected and reshoot.
Clear or frosted products lose their edges. Glass jars, cosmetics bottles and clear plastic are partly see-through, so the model has to guess. Shoot them against a darker background so their outline shows, then check the edges and use Restore where needed.
Thin parts disappear. Cables, straps, jewelry chains and price-tag strings are often only a few pixels wide. Zoom in and paint them back with Restore.
The product looks small in the frame. WipeMark keeps your photo's full size but does not crop. If the product fills less than the share your marketplace wants, crop it in your phone's photo editor or a layout tool afterward.
Which format to download
For a white main image, choose white and download JPG. It is small and every marketplace accepts it. For cut-outs that will go into ads, banners or lifestyle composites, download PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
Questions people ask
What background does Amazon require for product photos?
Amazon's image requirements ask for a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, on the main image. Additional images can show the product in use or in a setting. Read the current rules in Seller Central because they also cover props, text and category exceptions.
How big should a product photo be?
Amazon recommends 1,600 pixels or more on the longest side and caps images at 10,000 pixels. Shopify accepts uploads up to 20 megapixels. WipeMark keeps your original size, so shoot large and the cut-out stays large.
Is the white from WipeMark true white?
Yes. When you choose white, the background pixels are set to pure white rather than a light gray. The edge pixels around your product blend from the product color into white, which is what keeps the outline from looking jagged.
Can I remove backgrounds from many product photos at once?
Not with WipeMark. It handles one photo at a time and has no batch mode or API. For a few listings that is fine. For a catalog of hundreds of products, a paid batch service will save you time.
Should product photos be PNG or JPG?
For a white main image, JPG is fine and keeps files small. For a cut-out that you will place into a banner or template later, download PNG or WebP so the background stays transparent.
