Where a white background helps
A plain white background is the default for anywhere a photo has to look neutral: marketplace listings, staff pages on a company website, resumes and conference bios, school projects and real estate or rental listings that show small items. It removes the room so nobody judges your clutter, and it makes a set of photos taken in different places look like they belong together.
For selling, the rules vary by site. Amazon requires pure white on the main image, as covered on the product photo page. eBay's picture policy does not require any background color but does require photos that accurately show the item, at least 500 pixels on the longest side, with no added borders or text.
Where you should not use it
A white background added by software is an edit, and some official photos ban edits outright. The US State Department's passport photo page asks for a plain white or off-white background and an original photo without filters or digital changes. The UK's passport photo rules ask for a plain light-colored background and a photo unaltered by computer software. For those, stand in front of a real white wall or door, or go to a photo service that follows your country's rules.
The same caution applies to driving licenses, visas and other ID documents. Check the issuing agency's own page before you edit anything.
Getting a white background that looks natural
Match the light. White is the brightest color there is, so anything shot in dim or warm light looks muddy against it. Shoot near a window in daylight, facing the light, and the subject will sit on white without looking pasted on.
Watch for color spill. A person photographed in front of a green hedge or a red wall picks up a tint on hair edges and cheeks. Against white that tint shows more. Moving a step away from a colored wall reduces it.
Keep the subject whole. Shoulders, elbows and feet cut off by the frame end in a hard line, which looks odd on an otherwise clean white background. Leave a little room around the subject when you shoot.
Common problems and fixes
A dark outline around hair or fur. Partly transparent edge pixels still carry some of the old background. Brush lightly along the edge with Erase at a small size, or choose a light gray instead of white with the color picker if the outline keeps showing.
Part of a white shirt went missing. White clothing against a light wall is hard to separate. Paint it back with Restore. If a lot is missing, reshoot in front of a darker background so the shirt stands out, then switch the background to white.
The shadow under the object is gone. The tool treats cast shadows as background, so products and pets can look like they are floating. That is normal for listing photos. If you want a grounded look, add a soft shadow back in a design tool.
Which format to download
Download JPG for a white background. It is the most widely accepted format and keeps files small. Use PNG if the photo will go through more editing and you want to avoid repeated compression. If you think you might want a different color later, download a transparent PNG as well so you do not have to start over.
Questions people ask
How do I change a photo background to white for free?
Drop the photo into the tool above, wait about 20 seconds for the background to be removed, choose white, and download. The result is the same size as your original, with no watermark and no account needed.
Can I use this for a passport or visa photo?
Usually not. The US State Department asks for an original photo without filters or digital changes, and the UK asks for photos unaltered by computer software. Take the photo against a real plain white or off-white wall instead, and check your own country's rules.
Why does the white look gray next to my subject?
The new background is pure white, but your subject was lit for the old room. If the light was dim or warm, the person or object looks darker or yellower against bright white. Brightening the original slightly before uploading, or reshooting near a window, gives a more natural match.
Is the white background pure white?
Yes. The background pixels are filled with pure white. Only the edge pixels blend between your subject and white, which keeps the outline smooth instead of jagged.
Should I save a white background photo as JPG or PNG?
JPG, in most cases. It has no transparency to keep, and the file is smaller. Choose PNG if the image will be edited again later and you want to avoid any compression.
