3.5 × 4.5 cm, in pixels
"Passport size" on Indian forms means 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall. An online form cannot measure centimetres, so it works in pixels, and the link between the two is the DPI. At 200 DPI, the figure most exam notices use, 3.5 × 4.5 cm is 276 × 354 pixels. The tool does that sum for you and also writes 200 DPI into the JPEG, so a form that reads the DPI sees a consistent file.
Some forms give pixels instead, such as 200 × 230 for SBI or 320 × 400 for India Post GDS. Switch Dimensions to Pixels and type them in; the crop box changes shape to match.
Framing
The crop box has the form's shape, so nothing is stretched. Use the zoom slider until your face fills most of the box, roughly from the top of the hair to just below the chin taking up two thirds or more of the height, with a little space above the head. India Post's notice puts it as the face filling 70–80% of the photo; others are less specific. Keep the face centred and straight.
Background
Most forms want a plain white or light background. If your photo was taken against a busy room, White background removes it on your device, using a small person-segmentation model from Google (MediaPipe). It handles head and shoulders well; very fine hair against a busy background can leave a faint edge, so a plain wall is still the better start.
Do not use this for an actual passport, visa or any document where the rules forbid edited photos.
KB limits
The page starts at 20–50 KB, a common range. Change Min and Max to match your form. The tool keeps the file under the maximum (read as 1,000 bytes a KB) and, if it comes out under the minimum, adds empty bytes so it qualifies. The photo itself is not changed by that.
Exam-specific rules, read from each official notice, are on the exam photo sizes pages.
When the form takes the photo itself
More portals now capture the photo live. SSC's 2026 notices say the application takes your photograph through the camera while you fill it in, so for SSC you upload only a signature. SBI asks for both: an uploaded photograph and a live photo from a webcam or phone during registration. For a live photo, the same advice applies as for taking one to upload: plain light wall, daylight from the front, no cap or dark glasses, and look straight at the camera.
Checking a photo you already have
If a cyber café or studio gave you a file, open Check a file and drop it in. It shows the real format, KB, pixels and DPI, and marks each against your form's rules, so you know before the portal does.
Questions people ask
What is passport size in pixels?
3.5 × 4.5 cm at 200 DPI is 276 × 354 pixels; at 300 DPI it is 413 × 531. Forms that ask in centimetres usually expect 200 DPI, and the tool writes that DPI into the file.
Can I use this for my actual passport application?
No. For an Indian passport the photo is taken at the Passport Seva Kendra, and passport offices in other countries reject photos whose background was edited by software. This page is for exam and job application forms that ask for a passport-size photo.
The form wants a white background. Can it do that?
Yes. White background finds you in the photo with a small model that runs on your device and makes everything else white. A photo taken against a plain light wall still gives the cleanest edge.
What KB should a passport-size photo be?
It depends on the form. CTET asks for 10–100 KB at 3.5 × 4.5 cm; SBI asks for 20–50 KB at 200 × 230 pixels; India Post GDS asks for 30–100 KB at 320 × 400 pixels. The exam pages list each one from its notice.
