How to do it

  1. 1Drop your photoThe smaller the person is in the frame, the more convincing the fill will be.
  2. 2Paint the whole person and their shadowCover head to feet, bags and shadow included, with a small margin. Leave no stray hand or foot.
  3. 3Erase in passesErase, look at the result, then mark any leftovers and erase again. Download at full size when it looks right.

When removing a person works

Removing a person is the same job as removing any object, just with a shape that is larger and more complicated. The eraser sends the area around your mark, at most 1024 pixels, to WipeMark's server, where LaMa fills it from the surrounding scene. The patch goes back into your full-size photo in your browser. Nothing is stored.

It works best when the person is:

  • Small in the frame, like a tourist far behind you at a landmark.
  • In front of something plain or repeating: sea, sand, grass, a stone plaza, a hedge, a clear sky.
  • Separate from everyone else, not overlapping you or your friends.

It struggles when the person is large, close to the camera, standing in front of something specific like a sign or a doorway, or touching the people you want to keep.

Marking a person properly

Cover everything that belongs to them. Bags, umbrellas, selfie sticks, the dog on the leash. Anything you miss stays as a floating fragment.

Include the shadow. On a sunny day a person casts a long, dark shadow. An empty shadow on the pavement is the clearest sign of an edit.

Check reflections. Shop windows, puddles, wet sand and glass doors may show the person a second time.

Leave a margin. Mark a little outside the outline. Edge pixels of clothing left behind turn into a colored smudge.

Use the brush for people. Press B for the brush and make it larger with the bracket keys for the body, smaller for the edges near people you are keeping.

Erase in passes

For a figure that covers more than a small area, do not mark the whole person at once. Mark the top half, erase, then mark the rest on the result and erase again. Each pass fills from more real surroundings. Use Erase again as many times as you need, and Cmd Z to undo a mark before you erase.

Common problems and fixes

A ghostly outline remains. The mark was too tight. Erase again with a mark slightly larger than the outline.

Lines in the background bend. A railing, horizon or building edge ran behind the person. Erase in smaller parts, so each fill has the line on both sides to follow.

A repeated texture looks stamped. Large fills on grass or sand can repeat a pattern. Erase smaller areas, or crop the photo a little tighter afterward.

Feet are cut off. People standing on the ground are easy to miss at the bottom. Zoom in and check the ground line.

Which format to download

The download keeps your photo at its original size. Use JPG for travel and phone photos, PNG if you are going to keep editing, or WebP for a smaller file to share online. Keep your original too.

Questions people ask

How do I remove a person from a photo for free?

Drop the photo into the eraser above, paint over the person including their shadow, and press Erase. The eraser fills the area from the surrounding scene in a few seconds, and you can repeat on the result until it looks right, then download at full size.

Why does the space where the person was look blurry?

The person covered a large or detailed area, and the eraser had to invent what was behind them. Results are best for small figures against plain or repeating backgrounds. For larger figures, erase in sections and expect some softness.

Can I remove someone standing right next to me?

It is difficult. When two people touch or overlap, the eraser has to rebuild part of the person you want to keep, such as a shoulder or arm, and it cannot know what that looked like. Small background people work far better than someone sharing the foreground.

Can I remove a whole crowd?

Not well. When most of the background is people, there is nothing real left to fill from. Remove one or two distracting figures and leave the rest, or choose a different frame from the same moment.

Is it okay to remove an ex or a family member from a photo?

It is your photo to edit. Just be aware the result is a changed image. If you share it as an accurate record of an event, people may be misled.
