How to do it

  1. 1Drop the imageA photo, a graphic you made or an export you want to reuse. Keep it at the largest size you have.
  2. 2Box each line of textPress X and draw a box around one line or block at a time, covering any outline or shadow on the letters.
  3. 3Erase and repeatErase, check the result, then box the next line. Download at full size when the text is gone.

Text you can reasonably erase

Most text people want gone from their own images falls into a few groups: a caption burned into a photo by an app, a price or label on a product shot, a slide title on a graphic you want to reuse, an old event date on a poster you designed, or a name tag on your own photo. All of these are your images, and the eraser handles them the same way.

The eraser sends only the area around your mark, at most 1024 pixels, to WipeMark's server. LaMa, an inpainting model, fills the marked part from what surrounds it, and the patch goes back into your full-size image in your browser.

What decides how clean the result is

What is behind the letters matters more than the letters. Text on a flat color, sky, a painted wall or a soft-focus background disappears almost perfectly. Text on a face, a patterned shirt, a brick wall at an angle, or other text is much harder, because the eraser has to invent detail it never saw.

Thin text is easier than bold text. Thin letters leave lots of real background between strokes for the fill to use. A thick, heavy headline covers more of the background and needs more guessing.

Short lines are easier than paragraphs. Each fill works best when it is surrounded by real background. Erase a block of text one line at a time.

How to mark text

The box tool is usually best for text. Press X and drag a rectangle around one line. Make sure it covers:

  • descenders like g, p and y, and ascenders like h and l
  • drop shadows, outlines and glows, which often stick out a few pixels
  • any colored band or banner the text sits on, if you want that gone too

Press Enter to erase, then box the next line on the result. For text that curves around an object, or overlaps something you want to keep, use the brush with B and change its size with the bracket keys.

Problems and fixes

A ghost of the letters remains. The box missed a shadow or glow. Erase again with a slightly larger box.

The fill looks smudged on a gradient. Gradients change smoothly across the box. Use thinner boxes, one line at a time, so the fill only has to match a narrow band.

Text sat on a pattern and the pattern breaks. Stripes, tiles and grids may come out bent. Erase in smaller sections that each include a bit of the pattern on both sides.

Text crossed a person. Mark only the letters with a small brush, not a full box, so more of the person stays real. Expect some softness.

Which format to download

For graphics, screenshots and anything with flat colors or sharp edges, download PNG, which is lossless and keeps edges crisp. For photos, JPG keeps the file small. WebP is a good choice for images going back on a website.

Questions people ask

How do I remove text from an image without ruining the background?

Draw a box around the text in the eraser above, including any shadow or outline on the letters, and press Erase. The eraser fills the box from the surrounding background. Work line by line on large blocks of text so each fill stays small.

Why can I still see a faint shape of the letters?

Text often has a soft shadow, glow or anti-aliased edge that extends past the letters. If your box covered only the letters, that halo remains. Erase again with a slightly larger box.

Can it remove text that crosses a face or a detailed object?

It will fill the area, but it cannot know what the face or object looked like underneath, so it creates something that fits. Results are much better when the text sits on sky, walls, solid colors or soft blur.

Can I replace the text with new text?

Not in WipeMark, which only erases. Remove the old text here, download the image, and add new text in a design or slide tool.

Can I use this to edit text in documents, receipts or screenshots of other people's content?

Don't. Changing text on documents or records to mislead someone can be fraud, and removing credits from other people's images can break copyright rules. WipeMark is meant for images you made or have the right to change.
