Why a black background works

Black takes everything else out of the picture. There is no room, no wall texture, no color to compete with the subject, and bright details look brighter next to it. That is why it shows up so often in jewelry and watch photos, in moody portraits, and in stores and portfolios with a dark design.

Getting it in a real studio takes a black backdrop, careful lighting and enough distance that light does not spill onto the backdrop. The tool above skips that. It removes whatever was behind your subject and fills it with a solid color, and black is one of the built-in options. This page is a closer look at one case of changing the background color, the one where edge problems show the most.

Where it is used

Products for dark-themed stores. If your shop or portfolio uses a dark page design, product photos on white look like bright boxes on the page. On black they blend into the layout. Check your marketplace's photo rules first: some require white for the main image, as covered on the product photo page.

Jewelry, watches and glassware. Metal and stones look brighter against black, and reflections stand out. These subjects are also the hardest to cut out, because thin chains and clear glass mix with whatever is behind them. Expect to touch up chains and the gaps between links.

Portraits and headshots. A dark background gives a more dramatic, low-key look than the usual white or gray. It suits artist bios, speaker pages and profile pictures where you want the face to stand out. The profile picture page covers sizes and cropping.

Social posts. A cut-out subject on black stands out in a light feed, and it leaves dark space for white text if you add a caption in a design tool.

Pure black or near-black

The Black swatch is pure black, RGB 0, 0, 0, which matches a page whose background is also pure black. Many dark website designs use a near-black such as a dark charcoal instead; if yours does, pick that exact color in the color picker so the photo blends into the page with no visible box.

Edges show more on black

On a white background, small leftovers of the old background are hard to spot. On black they glow.

Light fringes. Edge pixels are blended between the subject and the old background. If you shot against a white or light gray wall, that blend leaves a thin pale line around the subject. Choose Touch up edges, then use Erase with a small brush and light strokes along the outline.

Hair. Flyaway strands that were mixed with a light background turn into a gray haze around the head. Erase the haze carefully. The hair page explains which strands can be kept and which are better let go.

Missing dark parts. A black jacket or dark hair against a dark wall can be cut away by mistake. Paint it back with Restore.

Gaps that still show the old room. The space between an arm and the body, or inside a ring or a handle, should be black. If it still shows the original background, clear it with Erase.

Shoot for black if you can

If you know the photo is going on black, shoot it against something dark: a dark wall, a black sheet, a doorway into an unlit room. Light the subject from the side and keep the light off the background. The cut-out then has dark edges, which disappear on black instead of glowing.

Which format to download

Download JPG for a finished photo on black. It is the most widely accepted format, and a flat black area compresses to a small file. Download PNG if the image will be edited again and you want to avoid repeated compression. WebP gives smaller files for websites. The download is the full size of your photo, up to 25 megapixels. Keep a transparent PNG as a master copy, so you can put the subject on a different color later without cutting it out again.

Questions people ask

How do I change a photo background to black for free?

Drop the photo into the tool above. In about 15 seconds the background is removed. Choose Black under the background options, check the edges, and download. The image is full size, with no watermark and no account.

Is the black background pure black?

Yes. The Black swatch fills the background with pure black, hex #000000 (RGB 0, 0, 0). If you want a softer near-black or a dark brand color instead, pick it in the color picker.

Why is there a light outline around my subject on black?

Edge pixels are partly see-through, and they still carry some of the old background. If that background was light, the edge reads as a pale fringe against black. Brush along it with Erase at a small size. Shooting against a darker background to begin with avoids most of it.

Does it work for hair?

Yes, with more care than on white. Loose strands and flyaways that blended with a light wall can leave a gray haze on black. Erase the haze in light strokes, and accept that the finest wisps may be lost. A photo taken against a dark or mid-tone wall gives better hair on black.

Should I download JPG or PNG for a black background?

JPG for a finished image to post, upload or send. It is small and accepted everywhere. PNG if you will edit it further, since it adds no compression. Keep a transparent PNG too, so you can try another color later without cutting the photo out again.
