Etsy PNG Black Background: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Etsy says transparent parts of a PNG appear black. Here is why, how to flatten your listing photos, and why digital download files can stay transparent.

Key takeaways
- Etsy's help center says transparent PNG files are not supported for shop images, and that the transparent parts of an image will appear black on Etsy.
- The fix is to flatten the cut-out onto a solid background, white or a brand color, and upload a JPG or a PNG with no transparency.
- The checkerboard you see in your editor is not part of the file. It only marks empty pixels, which is why the problem stays hidden until the photo is on Etsy.
- If you sell digital downloads, the file buyers download can stay a transparent PNG. Only the listing photos need flattening.
- Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels in width and height, says images over 1 MB may not finish uploading, and wants the first photo landscape or square.
If your transparent PNG turns black on Etsy, Etsy is doing what it says it will. Etsy's help center states: "Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported. If a file contains transparency, the transparent parts of the image will appear black on Etsy." That line comes from Etsy's image requirements and best practices page, checked October 2026.
So the fix is not a setting on Etsy. You put the cut-out on a solid background yourself, before upload, and export a file with no transparency. This guide explains why the black appears, shows how to flatten an image in the tools Etsy sellers use most, and covers the case that confuses digital sellers most: your clip art, sticker or sublimation file can stay transparent, even though its listing photos cannot.
Our white background product photo guide covers every marketplace's main-image rules in one place. This post goes deep on Etsy's black background problem alone.
What you see on Etsy
The symptoms are easy to spot once you know them:
- A black box behind the design. Everything that was empty around your sticker, clip art or product cut-out is now solid black.
- Dark, muddy edges. Soft edges, glows and anti-aliased lettering can pick up a dark halo, because those pixels were partly transparent.
- Drop shadows turn into dark smudges. A soft shadow on transparency is mostly see-through pixels, so it blends into the black.
- Dark designs vanish. Black or navy lettering on a black background is close to invisible in search results.
The photo looked fine on your computer, because your editor and file browser drew the empty area as a checkerboard or as white.
Why transparent areas turn black
Every pixel in an ordinary photo stores three numbers: red, green and blue. A PNG with transparency stores a fourth, called alpha, which says how solid the pixel is. The PNG specification defines alpha as the pixel's degree of opacity, with zero meaning fully transparent. In an 8-bit image alpha runs from 0 to 255, so a pixel with alpha 0 is invisible, 255 is solid, and an edge pixel at 128 is half see-through. Our transparent PNG explainer covers the formats and the numbers in more detail.
An empty pixel is not "nothing". It still has red, green and blue values; alpha 0 just hides them. Many editors store those hidden values as black, 0, 0, 0. When anything along the way stops honoring alpha, the image has to be shown as solid pixels, and the empty areas take on a color. Etsy does not publish how its image processing works. It does say it compresses uploaded images and converts them to the sRGB color profile, and its help page names black as the result for transparent parts.
What flattening means
Flattening is blending every pixel onto a solid background so alpha is no longer needed. A solid pixel stays exactly as it was. An empty pixel becomes the background color. A half-transparent edge pixel becomes a mix: half design, half background. The math is the same compositing formula every editor uses. If the background is black, that mix is darker than the design; if it is white, it is lighter.
When you flatten the image yourself, you choose the background. When you upload a transparent PNG to Etsy, Etsy's result is black, and you get whatever black does to your edges and shadows.
Why your editor shows a checkerboard
Photoshop, Canva, Procreate, GIMP and most other editors draw a gray and white checkerboard behind empty pixels. The checkerboard is a display convention, not part of the file. It exists so you can tell "transparent" apart from "white", which look identical on a white page. Your phone's photo viewer or your computer's file preview may draw transparent areas as white or a neutral gray instead, which is why a file can look perfect everywhere until it reaches Etsy.
The fix: flatten onto a solid background
The fix has three parts, in this order:
- Choose a background color that suits the design: pure white for a classic catalog look, or a soft brand color for a styled shop.
- Flatten the cut-out onto that color, so every pixel is solid.
- Export a JPG, or a PNG with transparency turned off. JPG is the safer default for listing photos, since JPG cannot store transparency at all and the files are smaller.
The background color matters. Etsy has no white-background rule, so a brand color is fine. White is a poor choice for white or very light designs, common in sublimation and t-shirt files: flattened onto white, they disappear.
Try it below. Pick a design color and a background, and compare the result with what Etsy's black does to the same cut-out.
Flatten a cut-out before Etsy does it for you
| Pixel (alpha) | On black | On white | On your color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid design (255) | 235, 120, 150 | 235, 120, 150 | 235, 120, 150 |
| Soft edge (128) | 118, 60, 75 | 245, 187, 202 | 239, 176, 185 |
| Drop shadow (64) | 0, 0, 0 | 191, 191, 191 | 182, 175, 165 |
| Empty background (0) | 0, 0, 0 | 255, 255, 255 | 243, 233, 220 |
Contrast 2.3:1. The design stands out. Etsy only says transparent parts turn black; the soft-edge and shadow values in the black column are the arithmetic of blending onto black, a model rather than Etsy's documented pipeline.
Notice the soft edge row. In the black column, which models the result Etsy describes, an edge at alpha 128 comes out at about half the design's brightness. That is the dark halo around edges. On a background you choose, the same edge blends into that color and looks natural.
How to flatten in common tools
Each method below does the same thing: put a solid layer under the design, then export without transparency. Before uploading, open the exported file and check the corners and edges.
Photoshop
- In the Layers panel, add a new layer and drag it below your design layer.
- Choose Edit > Fill, set Contents to White or a color you pick, and click OK.
- Choose File > Export > Export As, pick JPG, and export. If you export PNG instead, turn off the Transparency option.
Canva
- Click an empty part of the page and set a page background color, or place a colored rectangle behind the design.
- Go to Share > Download and choose JPG.
A JPG download from Canva cannot carry transparency, so the page background color is what fills the empty areas.
GIMP
- Set the background color in the toolbox to white, or to the color you want behind the design.
- Choose Image > Flatten Image. GIMP's manual explains that flattening removes transparency and the background color shows wherever every layer was transparent.
- Choose File > Export As and save as
.jpg.
Photopea
Photopea works like Photoshop in a browser. Add a new layer, fill it with white or your color, drag it below the design, then use File > Export as > JPG.
Procreate
- Open the Layers panel. The bottom layer is Background color.
- Make sure its checkbox is ticked, so it is visible, then tap it and choose white or your color.
- Open Actions (the wrench), tap Share, and choose JPEG.
If you share a PNG with the background color layer hidden, you get a transparent PNG, which is what you want for a digital download file but not for a listing photo.
Preview on Mac
Open the PNG, choose File > Export, and set Format to JPEG. When we converted a transparent PNG to JPEG with sips, the converter built into macOS, the transparent pixels came out white even though they were stored as black. Preview likely behaves the same, but open the exported file to confirm before you upload, and remember that a white fill does not suit a white design. For a colored background, use one of the editors above.
WipeMark
If you are cutting the design out of a photo anyway, you can choose the background at the same time. Upload the photo to WipeMark, wait about 15 seconds for the background to be removed, and touch up edges with the Restore and Erase brushes if needed. Then, under Background, choose White or pick any solid color instead of Transparent, choose JPG or PNG, and download.
WipeMark is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. The download is full size, up to 25 megapixels, which comfortably covers Etsy's 2000-pixel recommendation. The browser sends a reduced copy, at most 1024 pixels, for processing, and nothing is stored.
Remove a background and drop the design on white or your brand color, full size and free.
Remove a background nowDigital downloads: the file can stay transparent
This is the part that trips up clip art, sticker and sublimation sellers. Your listing has two kinds of images, and Etsy treats them differently:
- Listing photos are the images shoppers see on the listing page and in search. These follow Etsy's image rules, so transparent parts turn black. Flatten them.
- Digital files are what the buyer downloads after purchase. You upload them separately, in the digital files section of the listing.
Etsy's guide to managing digital listings lists .png and .zip among the supported file types, and allows up to five files per listing at a maximum of 20 MB each. So the transparent PNG you made is the right file to sell. Keep it transparent.
A few habits help here:
- Zip sets of designs. Five files per listing goes quickly with a bundle. A zip archive can hold many PNGs and returns them exactly as they went in, transparency included.
- Name files carefully before upload. Etsy says buyers see the same file names you upload, and the names cannot be edited afterwards.
- Say "transparent PNG" in the listing. Since the preview photos cannot show real transparency, the title or description has to tell buyers what they are getting.
Show transparency honestly in a mockup
A flattened preview cannot be transparent, but it can show buyers that the file is. Here are honest ways to do it:
- Checkerboard preview. Place the design over a gray and white checkerboard and flatten the whole thing into a JPG. Shoppers recognize the pattern, and the black problem goes away because the checkerboard is now ordinary pixels. Label it "transparent background" in your photo or description, since the checkerboard is part of the image, not a sign the image is transparent.
- Light and dark side by side. Show the same design on a white and a dark background in one image. It shows that the design has no box around it and works on both.
- Product mockups. Place the design on a t-shirt, mug or tumbler mockup to show how it looks in use. Use only mockup templates you made or have a license for, and check the license allows commercial use in product listings. WipeMark does not make mockups; it only gives you the cut-out to place in one.
Etsy listing photo size and settings
Etsy's image requirements page gives these numbers and rules for listing images, checked October 2026:
| Setting | What Etsy says |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | A width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more |
| First photo minimum | At least 635 pixels wide and tall, to avoid showing up lower in search |
| File size | Images larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slower connection |
| File types | .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic; animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported |
| Color | Etsy converts images to sRGB; convert before upload if colors look wrong |
| Orientation | The first photo should be landscape or square |
| Compression | Images may look less sharp after upload because Etsy compresses them |
Etsy also says thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape shapes in different places, and recommends leaving enough space around the product to survive all three crops. Its thumbnail tips go further and suggest uploading horizontal or landscape images rather than square ones. For a flattened design, that means a landscape canvas with generous margin around the artwork.
The 1 MB note is another reason to prefer JPG for listing photos. PNG is lossless, so a large, detailed PNG can easily pass that limit, while a JPG of the same image is usually much smaller.
A quick checklist before you publish
- The listing photos have no transparency: JPG, or PNG exported with transparency off.
- The background color contrasts with the design, which matters most for white designs.
- Edges look clean at full zoom, with no dark halo left from an earlier black flatten.
- Images are at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, and the first one is landscape or square.
- Files are around 1 MB or less, so uploads finish.
- For digital listings, the downloadable file is still the transparent PNG or a zip of them.
- The title or description says the download has a transparent background.
If you are building a set of images from photos, the transparent background maker gives you a transparent PNG for the download file. Switch the background to White or a color and download again for the listing photo.
Questions people ask
Why does my PNG have a black background on Etsy?
Your PNG has transparent areas, and Etsy does not support transparency in shop images. Its help center says the transparent parts of an image will appear black. Flatten the image onto white or another solid color and upload it again.
Can I upload a transparent PNG as an Etsy listing photo?
You can upload it, but Etsy says transparent PNG files are not supported and the transparent parts will show as black. Export a JPG, or a PNG with no transparency, on a solid background instead.
My design is white. What background should I flatten it onto?
Not white, or it will disappear. Use a dark or mid-tone color, a fabric mockup such as a dark t-shirt, or a checkerboard to show the transparency. Check that the design stands out against the color before you upload.
Do I need to flatten the PNG files I sell as digital downloads?
No. Etsy lists .png and .zip among the file types you can upload for a digital listing, so the file the buyer downloads can stay transparent. Only the photos shown on the listing page need a solid background.
How do I show buyers that my clip art has a transparent background?
Make a preview image that shows the design over a gray and white checkerboard, or the same design on both a light and a dark color, then flatten that preview into a JPG. Say in the title or description that the download is a transparent PNG.
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels in width and height. The first photo should be at least 635 pixels each way to avoid showing up lower in search, and should be landscape or square. Etsy also says images over 1 MB may not finish uploading.
